Notes
This recipe has kept the Brrrly 10-Pint Men upright through 13 Februarys in West Virginia. Adjust aquavit ratio to taste. We like it strong.
INGREDIENTS
- 2 bottles (750ml each) decent dry red wine
- 1 bottle (750ml) aquavit (or good vodka + 2 tsp caraway)
- 1 cup port or brandy
- ¾ cup brown sugar (or to taste)
- Peel of 1 orange (no pith)
- Peel of 1 lemon
- Optionally 1 cup water - if you're Swedish
- 12 whole cloves
- 8 cardamom pods, crushed
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 1 star anise
- 1 thumb fresh ginger, sliced
- 1 cup raisins + ½ cup slivered almonds (for garnish)
- ½ cup lingonberry or currant juice
METHOD
- 1. In a large pot (non-reactive), combine wine, aquavit, port/brandy, sugar, all peels, spices, and ginger. Heat gently — do not boil.
- 2. Once steaming and sugar dissolved, turn heat to lowest possible, cover, and steep 20–30 minutes. Taste frequently and adjust sweetness.
- 3. Strain into a clean pot or directly into insulated dispensers for camp. Keep warm over low heat or on the edge of the fire (never direct flame once alcohol is in).
- 4. Serve in small mugs with a spoon of raisins and almonds in the bottom. It’s traditional and delicious.
