Brrrly 10-Pint Men: What Thirteen Winters Taught Us

• by Eirik den Lange • FROSTBURN

Although some of us grew up in the colder climate and wear shorts all year round, Frostburn has taught us a few things, presented here as universal rules:

Rule one of Frostburn cooking: everything takes twice as long.

  • This certainly was the case with our first several years as everything we made was cooked over an open fire, in cast iron pots, dangling from tripods. We love cast iron, it is great, but it does not heat up fast when it is -27ºF, 40 mph winds, with horizontal snow, and the water content ion the wood is approaching 100%. But his si when the vikings are at their best!!

Rule two: your fingers will go numb no matter how good your gloves are.

  • Just make sure they don't fall off - seek heat before the fingers turn black. Red is fine, purple is reason for concern, black is too late.

Rule three: the people who stay up until 2am keeping the fire and the gløgg flowing are the ones who make it all worth it.

  • Universally!!

Most importantly, we learned that “Brrrly” is both a joke and a point of pride. We show up when sane people stay home. And we eat better than anyone else on the mountain.
